A sample of river water is suspected to contain zinc and sulphate ions. Describe how the presence of zinc ions and sulphate ions can be established.

-When aqueous ammonia is added to the water sample dropwise, a white precipitate which dissolves in excess ammonia is formed showing presence of zinc ions

- A few drops of acidified barium nitrate when added forms white precipitate showing presence of sulpate ions.

OR

To the water sample, add 3 drops of ammonia solution until in excess.Formation of a white precipitate that dissolves in excess ammonia solution to form a colourless solution confirms presence of zinc ions.
