a. Denitrification-this is the conversion of nitrate ions into ammonia gas and ammonium ion into ammonia gas which escape to the atmosphere. This process is facilitated by bacteria common in compacted and water logged soils
b. Combustion- burning vegetation causes the conversion of nitrogenous compound into nitrogen dioxide and ammonia which escape into the atmosphere as gases
c. Volatilization – some ammonia compound in the soil sublimes to form ammonia gas which escapes into the atmosphere
