In an experiment to determine the specific latent of vapourization of water, steam of mass 10 g at 100o is passed into 100 g of water initially at 20oC in a container of negligible heat capacity. The temperature of the water rises to 70oC.
(Take the specific heat capacity of water as 4.2 x 103J Kg-1 and boiling point of water as 100oC)
i) Determine the specific latent heat of vapourization of water
ii) State two sources of error in this experiment.

i) Heat lost by condensing steam = Heat gained by water

$\frac{10}{1000}$ x Lv + $\frac{10}{1000}$ x 4200 x (100 - 70)

= $\frac{100}{1000}$ x 4200 x (70 -20)

Lv = 1,974, 000J/kg
