A block of wood weighing 2.0 N is held under water by a string attached to the bottom of a container. The tension in the string is 0.5 N. Determine the density of the wood.

Up thrust = tension, T + weight

= 2.0 + 0.5 = 2.5 N - weight of water displaced

Mass of water = $\frac{2.5}{10}$ = 0.25 kg

Volume of water displaced = volume of wood

= $\frac{mass}{density}$ = $\frac{0.25}{1000}$ = 0.00025 m3

Density of wood = $\frac{0.2}{0.00025}$

= 800kg/m3
