1. Long distances - the available health facility may be very far from where the mother lives, at the same time the traditional birth attendant may be easily available during the routine home visits.

2. The urgency of delivery - this is a case where the mother is just about to deliver the baby and cannot wait till she reaches the nearest health facility. A traditional birth attendant, if nearby can be called urgently.

3. Closeness and trust for the traditional birth attendant - The mother may be more free with this attendant as compared to the professional staff at the health facility hence her preference for his/her services.

4. Poverty - the mother may view the services by the traditional birth attendant as cheaper, negotiable and affordable than those of a health facility especially if she is poor.

5. Lack of means of transport - the time of delivery for the mother may be due and at the same time there is no means of transport to the health facility. This may necessitate a traditional birth attendant to be called for help.
