To be disillusioned is to loss trust in a person you trusted or an idea you had hope in.throughout the play Betrayal in the city, one can not help help but recognize how disillusionment has occurred in the text, and how it seems to haunt the nation of Kafira. The old couple Nina and Doga have lost hope completely after the death of their son Adika who was killed in the students demonstrations. They have lost hope in their son Jusper who seems to have gone mad after the death of his brother Adika,he is referred as the one who is dead.He has no sense in what he says.Nina says that the government and authorities have robbed them everything they ever had.

Disillusionment is seen again when Mosese is in Jail,he says,"It was better while we waited,we have nothing to look forward to...."He no longer believes in the Biblical allusion of the poor inheriting the Kingdom of God. Jere says that he has lost lost hope in humanity and his carrying of the Bible in jail was to see if he could replace that humanity.

Jere argues with the askari over the issue of freedom, and he tells him that the outside of a cell may still be the inside of another,He has just lost hope in freedom in the country of Kafira.

In a nutshell, disillusionment has made the country of Kafira not to progress.
