i) Bench terracesThe process of levelling the land for agricultural or other purposes is called bench
terracing. It is generally done where there is deep heavy clay soil rather than in very
sandy soil. The most direct method is called the cut and fill procedure.
ii) Ridge terracesA ridge terrace consists of a furrow and ridge, constructed along the contour on
sloping land (usually less than 15%). Its purpose is to control soil loss and trap water.
Grasses and legume trees are usually used to stabilize the ridge, but fruit trees, banana
and cassava are also commonly used. During the wet season, the furrow fills with
sediment and farmers put this back on to their land.
iii) Channel terracesBroad based terraces are a series of broad channels and embankments constructed at a
suitable spacing along the graded contours of gentle slopes. The terraces are built with
either a variable or uniform, non-erosive grade leading to a safe outlet. They are also
called channel terraces.
