In order to complete a journey of 56 km, John walks for 1 hour at an average speed of V km/hr and then cycles for two hours at an average speed which is three times his walking speed. Calculate:
a) V
b) The average speed in km/hr for the whole journey

Answers

John
a) Total distance

= Distance walked + distance cycled

D = S x T

56 = v + 2 (3v)

56 = v + 6v; 56 = 7v

v = 8 km/h

b) Average speed for the whole journey

= $\frac{Total distance}{total time}$

= $\frac{56}{3}$ = 18.67 km/hr
