Let the total money be sh y

Food = $\frac{3}{5}$; Rent = $\frac{1}{2}\times \; \frac{2}{5}$ = $\frac{1}{5}$

Balance = 1 - ($\frac{3}{5} + \frac{1}{5}$) = $\frac{1}{5}$

$\frac{1}{5}$ x y = 1 400

$\frac{3}{5}$ x y = food

Food x $\frac{y}{5} = \frac{3y}{5}$ x 1 400

Food = $\frac{5}{y}\; \times \frac{3y}{5}\times 1 400$

= 1 400 x 3 = sh 4 200
