The concentration of the solution is higher than that of the cytoplasm of the red blood cell therefore the osmotic pressure of the solution is higher than that of the red blood cell. Hence water is drawn from the red blood cell and into the solution by osmosis. As more water is drawn from the red blood cell it shrinks. The shrinking of the red blood cell is known as crenation
