The leaf has a broad lamina to provide a large surface area for absorption of light.

The cuticle and upper epidermis are transparent to allow penetration of light to the palisade layer.

The air spaces of the spongy mesophyll are large enough to allow gases to circulate.

The palisade cells contain large numbers of chloroplasts, their arrangement and location next to the upper epidermis enables them to receive maximum light.
