The tongue rolls food into small round masses called boluses. The tongue then pushes the bolus into the pharynx.

Saliva is a mixture of water, saliva amylase and mucus. Water acts as a solvent. Mucus lubricates the food and lining of the mouth. Saliva amylase then digests starch into maltose.

Teeth mechanically break down food in the process of chewing and grinding referred to as mastication.
