Removable secondary storage devices refers to storage device that are not enclosed within the casing of the system unit. They are read and written onto by use of the appropriate drive. These removable storage devices include magnetic disks, magnetic tapes, optical disks and nowadays external hard disk.

Fixed secondary storage devices refers to the storage devices that enclosed and mounted inside the system unit.A good example of fixed secondary storage device is the hard disk drive. It is called hard disk drive because it has its own drive.
