Explain the different types of tillage

1. Ploughing
? A shear, which is pulled along by some power device, slices its way under the soil as it goes along, thereby loosening the soil and turning it over.
? The soil is left in lumps of various sizes and may require other operations in order to make a suitable seed bed
? Mould board and disc ploughs are used
2.Harrowing
? Carried out to break soil clods after ploughing
3.Mounding
? Involves collection of the soil into more or less conical heaps in height from 30-100 cm
? it simultaneously permits two or more kinds of seed bed on the field, for tubers and other crops
4.Ridging
? collection of soil into elongated heaps called ridges
? Done using mechanical ridgers or manually using hoes

5.Bed making
? An elongated raised area especially useful in horticulture and nurseries
6.Grading and terracing
? Leads to changes in the gross topography of the field
? Terracing is for managing extremely sloping land for crop production creating a series of stairs
? Grading is done to enhance irrigation, like furrow or flooding where the ground is more or less levelled
7.Minimum tillage
? Frequent tillage operations tend to impair the soil structure thus exposes the soil to adverse effect of weather
? Therefore, as little soil disturbance as possible is done
? It preserves soil structure and also saves on cost
