This is a situation whereby a particular task holds onto a needed resource required by other tasks and refuses to release it for use by other tasks.

OR

A deadlock is a situation where a particular job holding a requested resource fails to realease it.
Also can be defined as a set of blocked processes each holding a resource and waiting it to acquire a resource hold by another process.
