Based on the number of tasks handled,the operating system is classified into two categories namely;single tasking and multitasking operating operating systems.
Single tasking:This operating system allows only one task or program to be executed or processed in the main memory at a time.A good example is MS-DOS.

Multi tasking:This operating system allows several task or programs to be processed in the main memory at a time.This is a achieved by allocating time slice for each task thus the tasks are processed apparently at the same time.Examples are window,UNIX,Novell or Macintosh
