The river and the source does well to explain the place of a woman in the society, not only in past generations but also in our own.

Akoko is described by her father as the source of a river. In those days the main role of a woman was to bear children which is true to date. This is not to say that this is her only role. The book reveals more.
Akoko not only bore children but she did well raising them, other women who are crowned to have done the same are Awiti,Wandia,Wandia's mother and Nyabere.

In the book women are also seen to contribute to the family's income.Akoko is said to have increased the cattle in her husband's compound while the rest take up jobs to earn an income.

Women in the river and the source play a major role in pulling the family together especially when conflict arose. They acted as bridges to the quarrelling parties e.g Elizabeth during Aoro's suspension.
These are but a few instances where the river and the source shines light upon the role of women in the society.
