The river and the source depicts a society that is mostly male dominated.Nevertheless we can't help but marvel at the courage shown by the female characters mentioned in the book.

Akoko, the first born daughter of a chief is one of them. When she was young she did not let the presence of her male siblings intimidate her rather she showed courage in defending what she knew was right. As a grown and married woman she is shown to has increased her husband's wealth a great deal and even after her husband's death she stood to defend her own. At her death she is considered a great woman by all.

Elizabeth follows in her grandmother's footsteps as she managed to sit for her final examinations something not expected from a girl during that time. She not only sits for the exams but also tops the class defeating all the boys in the class.

Next comes Vera,Elizabeth's daughter who had been topping her classes since she started schooling. She impressed her teachers so much that she earned a position as head girl.It doesn't end here with her as she chooses to pursue a male dominated career and excels.

Wandia comes forth as she topped the medicine class beating most boys in many subjects which forced Aoro to congratulate her with a cup of coffee.
These are but a few women mentioned in the book that excel in a male dominated surrounding.
