(a) State the Archimedes principle (1mark)
(b).A light wooden block measuring 2cm by 5cm by 10cm floats in water with its length vertical. If ¾ of its length is submerged determine (density of water =1000kg/m^3)
(i) The density of the wooden block (3 marks)
(ii) The volume of the wooden block remaining above the surface when floating in a liquid of density 900kg/m^3. (3 marks)
(iii) Additional weight required to be placed on the wooden block so as to just submerge in this liquid
(3 marks)
(c) A meteorological weather balloon of volume 1.2m^3 is tied to a rigid support while being filled with helium gas. The mass of the fabric making the weather balloon is 0.3kg.Determine the maximum tension on the string tying the balloon to the rigid support.(density of air = 1.25kg/m^3 and density of helium is 0.18kg/m^3) (4 marks)

a. when a body is fully or partially immersed in a fluid it experiences an up thrust equal to weight of fluid displaced 1mk
nb. 3/4x100=75cm^3 1mk
b. (i)Mass of water displaced =75g
p=m/v 1mk
75/100=0.75g/gm^3 1mk

(ii).Volume displaced =m/? 1mk
75/0.90=83.33cm^3 1mk
Volume out =100-83.33
=16.67cm^3 1mk
(iii) if 83.33cm^3 mass is 75 g 1mk
then 16.67 cm^3 mass will be 15g 1mk
=0.015N 1mk
c. T+W=U 1mk
T+(3+0.18x1.2x10)=1.125x1.2x10 1mk
T=9.84N 1mk
