(a) State five ‘’pull factors’’ that facilitated European imperialism in Africa in the 19th century.
(b) Explain five roles played by trading companies in the European Colonization of Africa.

i. Africa was richly endowed with resources like minerals which attracted the Europeans.
ii. European powers competed one another to exploit the various resources. minerals, oil palm and ivory.
iii. Africans were politically weak, highly decentralized which made them easy targets f or European conquest.
iv. Inter-community warfare in Africa and natural calamities such as droughts and diseases made the Africans vulnerable to European rule/control
v. The existence of slave trade and slavery in Africa attracted the Europeans to come to Africa to end the trade and replace it with legitimate trade.

i. Carried out the general administration of the colonial on behalf of t he European powers. I.B.E.A.C, B.S.A.C.O
ii. Set up administrative forts and posts for effective Europe on administration of the “spheres of influence.
iii. Set up infrastructure. roads and railways to open up the colonies for effective occupation
iv. Helped in pacification/conquest of African communities in order to effect colonial rule
v. Collected taxes from the Africans to help meet the administrative costs of the colonies
vi. Carried out economic activities such as agriculture and mining. All these were exported to Europe as raw materials.
vii. Helped in stopping slave trade and the establishment of legitimate trade.
viii. Helped in civilizing local (African) communities. through encouraging Africans to acquire western education.
