Exfoliation occurs in areas with high diurnal range of temperature. During the day, the surface of the rock is heated while the inner layers remain relatively cool. This is because few rocks are good conductors of heat. During the night the surface of the rock is subjected to low temperature and contracts. Alternate heating and cooling of the rock surface leads to alternate expansion and contraction of the rock surface creating stress in the rock. This leads to peeling off the rock surface to form circular shells. This leads to the formation of a dome like structure referred to as an exfoliation dome.
