Interlocking spurs are projections of land in the upper course of the river that overlap with each other.

Formation of interlocking spurs.

They form when a river comes across an obstruction in the form of resistant rocks along its course. The river tends to curve around the resistant rocks following belts of less resistant rocks. The river therefore changes direction of flow and develops a winding course. The river flows faster and erodes on the outer bend then the inner bend. The outer bend is the concave bend while the inner bend is the convex bend. Due to intense erosion on the outer bend, river cliffs are formed while the convex bend is gently sloping and is called the slip off slope.
