Formation of an alluvial fan.

The feature is common in arid and semiarid areas. An alluvial fan is composed of silt, sand, gravel and boulders.
Deposition takes place where a fast flowing river in a constricted channel loses its velocity on entering a plain.
The river deposits sand, silt, gravel and boulders which spread to a fan shaped feature referred to as an alluvial fan. When two or more alluvial fans merge into a continuous fan, the feature is referred to as a bajada. Alluvial fans with steep slopes are referred to as alluvial cones.
