Deferred tributaries and deferred confluence.

Due to the raised nature of the river banks, tributaries tend to be barred from joining the river until a later stage. The tributaries therefore flows parallel to the river until where there is a break in the river bank where it can join the main stream. The tributaries flowing parallel to the main stream are referred to as deferred tributaries. The point where the tributary joins the mainstream is known as deferred confluence.
