Formation of a flood plain.

Q811192019921.png

A flood plain is a broad flat plain of alluvium on the old stage of a river across which the river flows and over which it may spread in time of flood.
A flood plain is produced both during to erosion and deposition by a meandering river.
The meandering widens the valley by removing the interlocking spurs reducing them into low bluffs.
As the meanders migrate downstream, slip off slopes merge to form continuous alluvial deposits on both sides of the channel.
During floods, alluvium is deposited on the entire floor of the valley resulting in the formation of a flood plain. Where flood plains are immersed, the bluffs are nonexistent.
