Introduction
A society that is enclosed with fright can only move backwards. This is because fear can only make one stagnate him his/her activities. The same situation is depicted in Moses Isegawa’s ‘The War of the Ears’.
Illustrations
It is fear and insecurity brought about by lack of electricity that has crated an economic sabotage in this society. The transformer behind Ma’Beeda’s residential area has been destroyed by the rebels. The place is therefore devoid of electricity and everybody falls at the mercy of the moon and the starts for lighting. The people are made to go home and once they get there, they barricade themselves inside the house at nightfall. ‘It was victory to arrive home. Ma’Beeda always celebrated with a strong cup of tea. This clearly demonstrates that fear leads to retrogression economically since without electricity, economy is sabotaged and people are forced to go back home.
Fear also makes the society retrogress in that it crippled the education system in this society. Other schools have closed down except Ma’Beeda’s and she has also received a letter that she should close her ears would be chopped off. As a result of fear, some teachers have been forced to run away hence shortage of staff. Mis Bengi is horrified by the chopping off of a parent’s ears and she is planning to quit teaching and move to the city where there is security. This leads to crippled education hence no progress in whichever way.
Fear leads to child abuse hence the young industrious men who would go to school and make the country develop live in a dilemma of being tortured and idled if they quit the militia groups. Major Azizima imagines himself in a classrooms and sees children doing exams. ‘He felt a yearning to return to school, to study and get a certificate…’ This is a clear indicator of forced labor and denial of the right to education for the children. The society hence cannot progress in terms of education and work.
Retrogression is also seen in this society as a result of fear since the rebels kill and torture those who collaborate and this leads to reduction in the personnel that would make the Ma’Beeda is also at the risk of losing his school and years if he continues operating the school.
Conclusion
In a nut shell, a society that is engulfed in fear only retrogresses as seen in the short story. The going backwards is seen in education, economy and infrastructure.
