An extensive depression called geosynclines is formed on the earth surface.

It is filled with water form rain and underground forming sea.

Surrounding land masses are intensively eroded and the resultant sediments deposited in the geosynclines in layers.

The geosynclines subsides further due to the weight of the deposits.

The layers of sediments are subjected to compressional forces which make them to fold into mountains e.g. Atlas and Alps
