Koro Apirana is determined to ensure that the Maori traditions of which he is the custodians are adhered to.According to the Maori, leadership is not only hereditary butv is also a preserve of men.Leadership of the tribe is rested on the eldest son to the eldest son.It is in view of this that he he is dismissive towards Kahu, the first born child to pourangi (Koro's son and heir to the tribe chieftaincy) simply because she is a girl. Koro says to her,"She has broken the male line of descent in our tribe."
Koro Apirana objects to parourangi's setting for the name Kahu for the new child. He is incensed that the baby was named after Kahutia Te Rangi, the male ancestor of the Whangara people. He feels that is an affront to Kahutia Te Rangi's prestige.Since the new child is a girl.
Koro vehemently objects to Rehua's wishes that Kahua's after birth including the birth cord be buried on the Morae in their village and dissociates himself from the act.
Koro Apirana establishes Kohanga Reo where young children could be instructed on the Maori language. He excludes women from the instructions conducted in the school. Kahu would be promptly chased away by Koro whenever she was caught near the instructions. Koro thinks it is a waste of time to educate a girl up to university level.
Koro Apirana's blind adherence to traditions have prevented her from appreciating and acknowledging her great granddaughter's unique possess darling unique qualities. Kahu possesses darling adventurism and passion to succeed, important leadership qualities. Kahu possess darling leadership qualities. For instance she is able to jump into the deep sea to retrieve the stone Koro had thrown into the depths of the sea,a feat none of the boys Koro was mentoring could manage.
Koro believes that it is only men who can offer leadership and provide solutions to complex problems and is not ready to receive inputs from women even though women like Nani flowers posses strong qualities. He only summons the boys and all available men of the village for an emergency meeting when the whale with a sacred sign is sighted in Whangara. When the efforts of the men and boys who head to the beach to try and make the whale return to the sea prove futile, out of desperation he instructs that Nani flowers and women now "act the men."

Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow
AN ELEGY
When he was here
We planned each tomorrow
With him in mind
For we saw no parting
Looming in the horizon
When he was here,
We joke and laughed together
And no fleeting shadow of a ghost
Ever crossed our paths
Day by day we lived
On this side of the mist
And there was never a sign
That his hours were running fast
When he was gone,
Through glazed eyes we searched
Beyond the mist and shadows
For we couldn’t believe he was nowhere
We couldn’t believe he was dead
(Laban Erapu)
