Human nature has always harbored beliefs of supernatural forces that control their lives. In The River and the Source" by Margaret Ogola,it is quite clear that the people of Ramogi believed in spirits that in return forced them to behave in certain ways.

First superstition creates conflict.A monogamous man was an unknown animal to the people of Ramogi. This,in their belief could only happen if a woman bewitching the man. Akoko is accused of bewitching Owour. This causes great conflict between conflict between her and the mother-in-law and Otieno- the brother -in-law. It causes her so much bitterness that she decides to go back to Yimbo. Owour had to cautiously push the council to intervene. He gets into conflict with the mother and brother. It is said that he almost struck her and throttled Otieno half dead. The single belief cause so much conflict.

Secondly, superstition causes fear. The people always lived in fear of an evil spell causing harm to them.It made them even fear to compliment like able antecedents of a child. Obura was a like able child but no one dared praise him because of the fear of an evil spell striking.Even the parents watched their tongues. His mother even resorted to reprimanding him unnecessarily for fear of effects of the evil spell. When Obura is lost, the mother feared to pray aloud lest some evil wind took her fears and turned them into a terrible reality. They feared even commenting on expectant women lest evil spirits caused trouble. When Nyar-Asembo is urging owour to take another wife, her fear stems out from the fact that if some ill wind took his only son then he would be heirles.

Finally, superstition causes suspicion. The people of Ramogi lived in constant suspicion. When Akoko breaks into a bout of colic, the grandmother wonders if some evil enemy had cast a spell on her.due to suspicion that somebody would bewitch the children, they had them adorn strings of beads.

In conclusion,as much as man harbors beliefs in superstition, they should be careful to avoid creation of other problems such as conflict, fear and suspicion.
