- The ensiled material should have a ridge shape or humped appearance when ensiling is complete.

- Check temperature- if higher than 32.2 water should be added and compaction reduced but if the temperature is below 32.2 compaction should be increased and dry material or molasses added.

- Ensiled material should be covered with a polythene sheet or a layer of dry grass to protect it from
water and air.

- The silo is covered with a thick layer of soil maintaining the ridge appearance

- Dig a trench all around the silo to drain off excess rain water
