a) Complete the table by filling in the missing atomic numbers and atomic mass
b) Write the electron arrangement for the following ions: (i) Ca+ (ii) P3-
c) What is the melting point of hydrogen in Kelvin?
d) Which of the allotropes of phosphorous has a higher density? Explain.
e) The mass numbers of three isotopes of magnesium are 24, 25 and 26.
What is the mass number of the most abundant isotope of magnesium? Explain.
f) Give the formula of the compound formed between aluminium and carbon.
g) Explain the difference in the melting points of magnesium and sodium.

Answers

John
a) Carbon = 6, Hydrogen = 1, Sodium = 11, Neon = 20.

b) Ca+: 2.8.8.1, P3+: 2.8.8

c) -259 + 273 = 14K

d) Red phosphorus. This is because it has a higher melting point.

e) The one of atomic number 24. This is because the mass number is closer to the relative atomic mass
(R.A.M) showing that it contributes to R.A.M more than the other two isotopes.

f) Al4C3

g) The melting point of magnesium is higher than that of sodium because magnesium has many delocalized
electrons hence strong metallic bonds.
