Nature of the coastal rocks
Where the coastal rocks are resistant to erosion a highland coast is formed. Such a coast is characterized by steep cliffs and headlands. If the coastal rocks are weak, they are worn out resulting in the formation of a lowland coast characterized by inlets such as bays

The slope of the coast
Wave erosion is very effective where coastal land slopes steeply into the sea. The steeper the coast, the greater the effect of wave erosion. On the other hand, where coastal land slopes gently into the sea, wave deposition is dominant.

Orientation of the coastline
This is the alignment of the coastline to the path of the prevailing winds. When the coastline lies across the path of the prevailing winds, the waves will be breaking transversely. Wave erosion will therefore be intense on that coast. Where the waves break at an oblique angle or almost parallel to the coast, transportation by longshore drift and eventual deposition of materials will be more pronounced than erosion.
