(i) The people had turned to the worship of other gods.
(ii) They practiced religious hypocrisy by stressing onoutward observances.
(iii) The people offered human sacrifices which was an abuse to the sacredness of life.
(iv) There were false prophets who preached peace when there was no peace.
(v) Divination and magic were practiced.
(vi) Worship was centered in the temple of Jerusalem.
(vii) King Josiah’s attempt to carry out religious reforms had failed.

(b) Seven characteristics of the New covenant foreseen by Jeremiah

(i) God’s law would be written in the peoples hearts.
(ii) There would be forgiveness of sins
(iii) There would be individual responsibility for one’s actions.
(iv) It would not be broken but would be everlasting one.
(v) God would initiate the covenant and each person would be expected to respond in faith
and obedience.
(vi) The restored community would be ruled by an everlasting and righteous king from the
house of David.
(vii) There would be justice and righteousness in the land of Israel.
(viii) God would restore peace and security in the land and the city of Jerusalem

(c ) Relevance of Jeremiah’s suffering and lamentations to Christians today

(i) Christians learn that not all they preach and teachwill be accepted.
(ii) Christians need courage and willingness to carry out God’s work.
(iii) Christians should be ready to be persecuted for theword of god. Hatred, mockery,
threats to their life, arrests and imprisonment should not deter them from proclaiming
the Gospel.
(iv) Christians should be careful not to be misled by false and self-proclaimed preachers with
promises of prosperity.
(v) Christians should pray for God’s strength and seek His guidance during times of
difficulties.
(vi) They should be confident in God’s power and tell the truth about His will
(vii) Christians should leave vengeance against their enemies to God.
(viii) Whenever the Christians are in problems God’s divine intervention will rescue them.
(ix) Christians should forsake family ties for the sake of serving God.
(x) They should advise the political leaders on various issues affecting the state.
