Areas near the equator experience high temperatures than those away. This is due to three reasons:
The surface area at the equator is smaller than that in the higher latitude areas hence the sun rays are more concentrated at the equator hence higher temperature.
The sun's rays hit the equatorial region at right angles and the Polar regions at acute angles hence more sunlight is concentrated along the equator.
The sun's rays travel through a longer distance to reach the polar region, therefore much of the sunlight is scattered, dispersed and reflected thus reducing the intensity of sunlight reaching the region.
