Onshore winds are cooled from below as they blow over a section of the ocean where cold currents are flowing. The temperature of the winds is lowered and when they reach the coast, they cool the land, lowering the coastal temperatures. If these winds are moist, the cooling causes the moisture to condense resulting in rainfall falling over the sea. By the time the winds reach land they have lost their moisture and are dry. Therefore they bring no moisture to the coastal strip. On the other hand, winds that blow over warm ocean currents are warmed from below. When these winds approach the coast, they warm the land, thereby raising the coastal temperatures. Since the winds are warmed by the ocean currents, they hold onto their moisture which they release on reaching the land. The coastal region therefore receives increased rainfall.
