First, there is use of sayings. There is a rich background of sayings. The people believed that the medicine to stupidity is marriage. This was shared when Akoko left for Yimbo,so Owour was being convinced to marry another wife. When Akoko returns from Kisuma to find the plunder for her wealth alarming. She feels like killing Otieno but remembers that there was no advantage in knocking one's head against a tree trunk. She also reckons that if you want to cut a tree, take time to sharpen an axe. She therefore decided to hold on and fight through sirikal. This exposed much of people's traditional wisdom.
Secondly is the use of songs. Akoko sings a dirge to the fallen hero,Chief Owour Kembo. She reckons his Nyadhi that made him pay thirty heads without demur. She also uses it to talk of their friendship. She recalls how Owour treated her like a queen and not as ravens and chickens as other men did their wives. It is also a fulfillment of the foreshadow that Akoko would one day be a great singer of the gueyo, owing to her powerful lungs. The young men from Sakwa engage in chants and praise songs when they brought the bride price to Yimbo. They use it to create a traditional celebratory mood. Akoko's beauty is said to be fit to inspire praises from many a nyatiti singer. This creates enjoyment and flavor in the novel.
Finally, there is use of narratives. Akoko tells the nephews Odongo and Opiyo myths on the origin of luos. That Were created Ramongi and placed them with Nyar-Nam around lake victoria which gave rise to the clans of Luos as Gem, Rachuonyo, Yimbo, Asembo. She also tells them a legend of the great luos of old.She talked of Lwanda Magere who would never be pierced by a spear. She also talks of Gor Mahia the witty one who could change his form into anything thus evading the enemy.
In conclusion,it is quite evident that the sayings , narratives and songs effectively expose the ways of the Luo people making the story as communicative as possible.

Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow
AN ELEGY
When he was here
We planned each tomorrow
With him in mind
For we saw no parting
Looming in the horizon
When he was here,
We joke and laughed together
And no fleeting shadow of a ghost
Ever crossed our paths
Day by day we lived
On this side of the mist
And there was never a sign
That his hours were running fast
When he was gone,
Through glazed eyes we searched
Beyond the mist and shadows
For we couldn’t believe he was nowhere
We couldn’t believe he was dead
(Laban Erapu)
