- Inhalation is the process of breathing in air(oxygen).

- The external intercostal muscles contracts.

- The internal intercostal muscles relaxes

- The diaphragm muscles contracts and flattens.

- The ribs moves outwards and upwards.

- Since the external intercostal muscle are thicker than internal intercostal muscles, volume within the thoracic cavity increases as compared to the lungs.

- As a result the atmospheric pressure increases while the pressure within the lungs decreases.

- Consequently, air is drawn into the lungs through the nose down a pressure gradient.
