Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to attract electrons to itself when chemically combined with another element. It can increase across a period but decreases down a group.

Electron affinity is the amount of energy released or spent when an electron is added to a neutral atom or molecule in the gaseous state to form a negative ion.
