Explain why, when the piston is:
(i) pulled upwards, valve A opens while valve B closes.
(ii) Pushed downwards, valve A closes while valve B opens

Answers

John
(i) Valve A opens due to high atmospheric pressure on the water while valve B closes due to its weight and that of the water above it

(ii) Valve A closes due to its own weight and pressure of water above piston while valve B opens due to the pressure of water below it.
