Time horizon, specificity in objectives, and leadership are the three primary features that differentiate functional tactics from business strategies. Whereas business strategies focus on bottom line outcome or broad objectives of the operation such as profits, revenues, and customer satisfaction; functional tactics focus on narrow goals such motivational mechanisms and hiring techniques. On the aspect of leadership, business strategies are developed and implemented by the top level managers and executive or advisory boards. On the contrary, functional strategies are adopted and put in operation by the departmental heads or unit controllers with the help of supervisors. Finally, while business strategies are long-term focusing on more than three years to come, functional strategies are short-term with a focus on the current situation and immediate future.
