The mammalian heart is composed of two auricles and two ventricles.

The atrium have thin muscular wall and receive blood to the heart from the veins. They form the upper chambers and these chambers have small volumes as compared to the ventricles.

The right auricle receive deoxygenated blood from body organs except the lungs. The left auricle receive oxygenated blood from the lungs through the pulmonary vein.

Ventricles are the lower chambers, they are composed of thick cardiac muscle. The left ventricle has thicker muscular walls than right ventricle and smaller volume.

The two ventricles are separated by an intraventricular septum. The role of ventricles is to keep flowing in the body through the blood vessels. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to all parts of the body while the right ventricle pumps blood only to the lungs.
