According to Matthew 11:7 Jesus said the following to the crowds concerning John the Baptist
That John the Baptist is he who was written about who would prepare the way for the coming of Christ. That among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John The Baptist, and from the days of John The Baptist, the kingdom of God has suffered violence and men of violence take it by force. For all the prophets had prophesied until John and if the crowds were willing to listen, John the Baptist was the Elijah who was to come. Jesus told those who had ears to hear.
