Definition: an artesian aquifer is a confined aquifer containing groundwater under
positive pressure. This causes the water level in a well to rise to a point where
hydrostatic equilibrium has been reached. A well drilled into such an aquifer is called
an artesian well.
Factors that influence the occurrence
- The aquifer must be of the same permeable materials
- The aquifer must be exposed in an area of sufficient precipitation
- The aquifer must lie in between two impermeable rocks for it to retain water
- The basin must dip towards a region where the land surface is lower than it is at
the exposed end of the previous formation.
