“Africans have to grapple with many challenges in the post-apartheid period”. Using Rayda Jacobs’ short story The Guilt, illustrate the truth of this statement.
The post-apartheid period in South Africa presented challenges that the African had to deal with, challenges that are presented by the inequality that was apartheid.

i). Insecurity/Crime. The post-apartheid period presents the challenge of insecurity to the white South Africans. Pg 3. The papers were full of stories of people getting killed in their own gardens and Lillian Thurgood had heard stories of husband-and-wife crime waves. Lillian experiences the insecurity when William Sidlay follows her into the house. She can only think of the revolver that is in her cupboard.
ii). Racial discrimination/ Racism. Post-apartheid South Africa portrays the racial tension between the black people and the whites. Pg, 3 ‘Was it racist if you were afraid and did not want to open your door to strangers?
iii). Economic hardships/Poverty: The black people have been portrayed as poor. They are walking around begging and asking for donations. William Sidlay carries with himself a letter that indicates he is from the Transkei and the fake letter makes it easier for him to beg. The blacks were denied economic opportunities and are therefore forced to take advantage of the white people in order to survive.
iv). Exploitation/ Opportunism: Exploitation is a major challenge the white South Africans have to grapple with. The blacks are taking advantage of the new government to exploit the whites. Pg 3, ‘They took merciless advantage, especially since the new government. There was a boldness not seen before.

Conclusion.
In conclusion, the post-apartheid period in South Africa presents new challenges such as racial tension and poverty affecting both the whites and the blacks.
