The Giriama believed that the British influence was breaking down their cultural belives and wanted to go back to the Giriama governance ways. The Agiriama faces alot of economic pressures such as over taxation through hut taxes from each family. The community was forced into cheap labour in the rubber and sisal plantations as well as being sold as slaves to the Arabs. The Agiriama experienced eviction and sezure of land that was fertile such as the Sabaki River Valley. They were unable to control ivory and palm wine trade yet they worked in this industries only to enrich the British. This was why the Giriama had to resist through Mekatilili wa Menza.
