During birth, different rituals were performed according to different communities. This was performed under strict supervision of the elderly women of the clan.
Burying of the placenta.This varies.Some communities buried the placenta in fertile land,in banana plantations.The gender of the baby was announced by the number of ululations which varied to different communities.For example Kisii community a baby boy was announced by three ululations and a girl was announced by two ululations.This was followed by purification thanksgiving and protection.Charms were given both to the mother and the child to protect them from evil spirits.The mother and the baby were secluded for a period of time according to different communities so as to give the mother to heal.The people brought gifts to the mother and the baby to appreciate the mother and as a sign of acceptance of the baby to the world.
