Hard water often contains ion of Calcium and Magnisium or other metal components. The idea of anion exchange involves introduction of granular substance(Resin) which is often coated with Potassium or Sodium ions. Calcium and Magnisium are positively charged ions thus introduction resin leads to a chemical reaction. For each two positively charged Potasium or Sodium atoms they are released in the water and exchanged with each Calcium or Magnisium atom in the water.
