React aqueous magnesium sulphate with aqueous sodium carbonate where you get magnesium carbonate as a solid and aqueous sodium sulphate.

Na2CO3 + MgSO4= Na2SO4 + MgCO3
Filtrate the mixture to obtain solid magnesium carbonate.

Heat the magnesium carbonate to form magnesium oxide and carbon dioxide which escapes into the atmosphere and you are left with a sample of magnesium oxide.

MgCO3= MgO+ CO2
