The effects of Swynnerton Plan of 1954
The output from small holding rose from 5.2 million (Kshs) in 1955 to 14 million in 1964, coffee accounted for 55% of the increase.
As a result of land consolidation and loans, wealthier smallholders, with larger tracts of land benefited while poorer smallholders experienced an increase in landlessness and unemployment.
The rich Kenyans acquired more land poor farmers got less land hence, squatters and landless class in Central province.
Large farms opened by Europeans were not divided up.
Settlement schemes were established to avoid a revolt against European and new rich Africans. Britain, the Commonwealth Development Corporation and the World Bank provided money to purchase land adjacent to the reserve areas around the white highlands. There were 180,000 acres of low density (high income) plots and 987,000 high density (low income) plots, a plan known as the …………. Acre scheme.
By the end of the schemes in 1971, 29,000 families had been settled on high density plots and 5000 families had been settled in the more lucrative low density areas.
However, despite the gains, the problem of transferring large-scale European farms to Africans remained. Indeed farms to ¾ to 4/5 of white highlands had not been distributed to smallholders. This worsened the search for scarce land and landlessness.
The large tracts of land been purchased by political elites and businessmen with access to capital and credit. The transfer of huge lands to the rich maintains the high level of inequality within the agricultural sector.

OR
