State the importance of osmosis in plant

Answers

i) Absorption of water from the soil by the root hair cells

ii) Provide support in seedlings, leaves and herbaceous plants, when parenchyma cells are turgid.

iii) Opening and closing of Stomata

iv) Distribution of water from cell to cell

v) Feeding in insectivorous plants

Absorption of water from the soil: roots hairs of plants absorb water from the soil by osmosis. This is the same process that helps in water distribution from cell to cell in the body.

Opening and closing of stomata: the guard cells make glucose through the process of photosythensis in the presence of light. As the glucose accumulates in the guard cells, their osmotic pressure increases and this causes them to draw water from adjacent epidermal cells by osmosis. This causes the guard cells to be turgid and thus opens. At night, the guard cells do not make glucose and therefore the glucose level reduces leading to the lowering of osmotic pressure. The guard cells lose water, become flaccid and therefore the stomata closes.

Feeding of insectivorous plants: these plants trap insects using structures that suddenly change their turgor pressure when distributed. The change in turgor pressure causes such structures to close trapping the insects which are digested and are a source of amino acids.
